Funeral Names Abandoned Indianapolis Newborn, Renewing Call for Safe Haven Awareness

Advocates say wider knowledge of Indiana’s Safe Haven Law could prevent tragedies.

Overview

  • He Knows Your Name hosted a service at Washington Park East Cemetery, giving the baby the name Haven Grace Hope and laying her to rest.
  • The infant was found on Sept. 1 at Brookside Park by a 12-year-old boy, and investigators have not identified the mother.
  • IMPD asked anyone with information to contact Child Abuse Detective Robert Burns at (317) 765-6096 or [email protected].
  • The case is being used to explain Indiana’s Safe Haven options, which now allow surrender up to 60 days after birth with handoff to first responders or use of a baby box.
  • The ministry says Haven is the 61st baby it has named and claimed, with the funeral held during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and a Safe Haven Law anniversary event planned for Nov. 18 at the Statehouse.
