Funcom Begins Layoffs in Studio Restructure After Dune: Awakening's Hit PC Launch

The company is reallocating staff to long-term live operations to prepare a major console release next year.

Overview

  • The Oslo-based developer said redundancies are part of a company-wide restructuring now underway, with no headcount disclosed as it seeks roles and support for those affected.
  • Funcom said the shift moves resources toward releasing new content, features and enhancements for the live game while building toward PS5 and Xbox versions next year.
  • Dune: Awakening was the studio’s fastest seller, reaching about one million players roughly two weeks after its June PC launch.
  • Eurogamer reports launch peak concurrent players around 190,000—about 100,000 via priority access—with recent daily concurrents near 20,000 as the first major free update rolled out.
  • Owner Tencent, which acquired Funcom in 2020, said it has no plans to pull out of working with the studio, though it may reduce investment in some areas.
