Funai Local Office in Paraná Attacked with Explosive Devices

Federal security agencies have opened an investigation into alleged use of explosives that could undermine safety and services for nearby indigenous communities.

Overview

  • The Unidade Técnica Local (UTL) of Funai in São Jerônimo da Serra was attacked and depredated on the night of Thursday, October 8, with windows and the building entrance damaged.
  • The Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) reported the use of a bomb and explosive artifacts, and Funai says no one was in the building and there were no injuries.
  • A police report was filed and the Polícia Federal and the Agência Brasileira de Inteligência (ABIN) were called to investigate and identify those responsible.
  • Funai president Lúcia Alberta Baré condemned the attack as the work of 'extremists' and warned the violence threatens staff safety and the agency’s ability to support indigenous communities.
  • The office serves Terra Indígena São Jerônimo, home to about 670 Guarani Ñandeva, Kaingang and Xetá people, and the attack comes against a background of long-running land disputes including a January Xetá reoccupation that is tied to a federal reintegration case.
