Fullerton Mother Arrested After 19-Month-Old Falls From Moving SUV

Police say the viral footage prompted the arrest.

Overview

  • Investigators say the fall occurred Jan. 20 between 8 and 9 a.m. at North Euclid Street and West Malvern Avenue in Fullerton.
  • Police-released video shows the front passenger door opening during a turn, the toddler tumbling onto the roadway, a near rear-end collision, and an adult retrieving the child before driving away.
  • After a witness provided identifying details on Jan. 24, officers located the SUV, the child and Jacqueline Hernandez at a residence in La Habra.
  • Hernandez, 35, was booked at the Fullerton City Jail on a felony child-abuse charge, and detectives are asking additional witnesses to come forward as the case remains under investigation.
  • The child sustained injuries consistent with the fall, was taken to a hospital and is expected to fully recover, and police have not determined how the door opened or whether proper restraints were used.
