Fugitive Extradited From India Arraigned in 2005 Long Island Fatal Crash

A rare U.S.–India transfer secured by federal partners revives the case before a Nassau judge next month.

Overview

  • A judge ordered Ganesh Shenoy, 54, held without bail after his arraignment on second-degree manslaughter in Nassau County.
  • Prosecutors say he ran a red light at roughly twice the speed limit in Hicksville on April 11, 2005, striking Philip Mastropolo’s car and pushing it 65 feet into a box truck.
  • Authorities say Shenoy left the U.S. on April 25, 2005, was indicted that August, and fought extradition in India for years before being returned last week.
  • The U.S. Marshals Service, the Justice Department and the U.S. Embassy in India assisted, and the DA said it is the office’s first extradition from India since 2017.
  • Shenoy pleaded not guilty and faces 5 to 15 years in prison if convicted, with his next court date set for Oct. 14.
