Fugitive Crime Leader Tommaso Morra Arrested in Cerignola

Coordinated by prosecutors in Brescia and Bari, the operation ending Morra’s six-month fugitive status will see him serve his remaining nine-and-a-half-year prison term.

Overview

  • Morra was detained early Sunday in his hometown by Polizia di Stato with support from the Guardia di Finanza.
  • He went on the run in February after avoiding execution of a definitive 12-year-and-six-month sentence for a 2022 attempted raid on the Mondialpol vault in Calcinato.
  • Prosecutors in Brescia and Bari led the multiagency investigation, with operational support from SCO, SCICO, GICO and local Squadre Mobili units.
  • Investigators had identified Morra as a top figure in the Cerignola-based "batterie cerignolane," a group allegedly planning armed assaults on cash-in-transit vehicles.
  • The arrest triggers enforcement of the roughly nine years and six months still outstanding on his final conviction.
