Fuel Spills After CPKC Train Derails Near Kamloops Lake

Authorities report no threat to the Savona community water system.

  • CPKC says the derailment happened Nov. 1 just before 7 p.m. near Cherry Creek, about 20 kilometres west of Kamloops.
  • A locomotive and about 17 rail cars left the track, including four loaded with fuel, five with gypsum and one with pulp products, with three empty cars that previously carried gasoline.
  • Officials confirm fuel leaked from two loaded cars and a containment boom was deployed on Kamloops Lake.
  • The Thompson-Nicola Regional District does not anticipate risk to the Savona Community Water System, and private domestic systems are being assessed with Interior Health.
