Fuel Leak From CPKC Derailment Near Kamloops Triggers Cleanup and Monitoring

Officials report no injuries or threat to the Savona water system, with teams containing limited leaks.

Overview

  • A CPKC freight train derailed just before 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 near Cherry Creek, about 20 kilometres west of Kamloops, sending a locomotive and roughly 17 cars off the tracks.
  • Preliminary assessments found four cars loaded with fuel, five with gypsum, one with pulp products, and three empty cars that previously carried gasoline.
  • Some product leaked from two loaded fuel cars, and responders deployed a containment boom as environmental crews began on-site cleanup.
  • The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says no risk is anticipated to the Savona Community Water System, and Interior Health is advising private system operators on assessments.
  • CPKC is coordinating with the B.C. Ministry of Environment and other agencies on remediation, the spill liability rests with the responsible party, and the cause is under investigation.
