Overview

  • The Government of India has officially notified the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata as deemed-to-be universities under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
  • This new status allows the institutes to award degrees instead of diplomas and launch doctoral, research, and innovative academic programs.
  • Both institutes will now participate in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and integrate with the Academic Bank of Credits to promote academic mobility and transparency.
  • The decision aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, emphasizing greater autonomy, innovation, and excellence in film and media education.
  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the move as a significant step toward transforming these institutions into global centers of cinematic and academic brilliance.
