FTC Issues $126 Million in Refunds to Fortnite Players, Nearing $200 Million Total

Overview

  • Nearly 970,000 players who filed valid claims will receive a second wave of refunds totaling $126 million for unintended in-game purchases.
  • Refunds will be delivered as 969,173 checks or PayPal payments on June 25 and 26, with checks to be cashed within 90 days and PayPal transfers to be accepted within 30 days.
  • The latest disbursement raises the total returned to consumers to nearly $200 million, following an initial $72 million payout to over 629,000 players in December 2024.
  • Epic Games agreed to a $520 million penalty after the FTC found it used deceptive “dark patterns” and violated COPPA, allocating $245 million for customer refunds and $275 million for privacy breaches.
  • Consumers charged for unwanted items between January 2017 and September 2022, hit with unauthorized child purchases or locked out after disputing charges have until July 9, 2025 to submit claims.
