Fruits and Vegetables Top German Food Recalls as Annual Notifications Rise

Lebenskraftpur’s analysis shows that enhanced surveillance drives a surge in notifications rather than a decline in food safety

  • The private review covers seven years of recall data from 21 June 2018 to 28 July 2025 on the federal BVL platform and 16 state portals
  • Annual recall notices have climbed to about 311 since 2022, with 198 already recorded by 17 August 2025
  • Fruits and vegetables account for 13.9% of recalls, followed by ice cream and sweets at 11.1% and herbs and spices at 10.7%
  • Pathogen contamination (20.6%), foreign bodies (20.3%), chemical residues (18.9%) and undeclared allergens (16.4%) are the leading recall triggers
  • Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia each recorded 244 recalls over the period, topping all German states in notifications
