Overview
- Law enforcement agencies across the Front Range will run a time-limited, zero-tolerance enforcement surge targeting expired registrations and temporary plates from Aug. 23 through Aug. 28.
- The coordinated effort is led by Colorado Springs Police and includes Denver, Aurora, the Colorado State Patrol, Monument, Palmer Lake, Fountain, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
- Denver says it is using an exception in its May 2024 low-level traffic-stops policy to allow targeted stops for recently expired registrations and temporary plates during the enforcement window.
- The Colorado DMV says new vehicle registrations must be completed in person, renewals can be done online or at kiosks in some stores, standard registrations have a 30-day grace period, and temporary plates have no grace period.
- Agencies frame the campaign as compliance-driven and a response to citizen complaints, but drivers can expect more traffic stops, possible citations, and reminders to renew immediately to avoid penalties.
