Fréjus Motorway Tunnel Opens Second Bore and Becomes Europe’s Longest Double-Tube Road Link

Starting this September the Fréjus axis will carry traffic diverted from the Mont Blanc Tunnel during its annual closure.

Overview

  • The 12.9-kilometer second bore opened for traffic on July 29 at 20:00 after a 14-year, €700 million upgrade executed by France’s Sftrf and Italy’s Sitaf.
  • The twin-gallery design separates directional flows and includes 34 emergency refuges and seven bypass connections to enhance safety and speed up rescue operations.
  • A new binational management centre now controls both galleries, establishing the tunnel as the longest double-tube motorway link in Europe.
  • From September, the doubled Fréjus axis will absorb vehicles rerouted from the Mont Blanc Tunnel during its annual safety works, strengthening cross-border freight and passenger capacity.
  • Local leaders, including Bardonecchia’s mayor, have urged restoration of rail services and broader mountain-focused investments to manage long-term traffic growth on the A32.
