Overview
- Iran’s Press TV, republished by GlobalSecurity.org, reported new Israeli air and artillery strikes on Jan. 1 targeting eastern Rafah, Gaza City’s Zeitoun and Shujaiya neighborhoods, and areas near the Bureij refugee camp.
- Press TV said at least 415 Palestinians have been killed and 1,152 injured since an Oct. 10 ceasefire took effect, and it cited an overall toll of 71,269 dead and 171,232 injured.
- An Algemeiner article highlighted a Salo Aizenberg analysis for HonestReporting arguing that Hamas-run Ministry of Health totals include combatants, natural deaths, internal violence and reporting errors.
- The analysis cited estimates of roughly 25,000 fighters within the tally and described a 3:1 male-to-female ratio among adults aged 18–59, presenting a lower civilian-to-combatant ratio than widely reported.
- A December 2024 Henry Jackson Society study found 84% of outlets did not separate combatant from civilian deaths, and Algemeiner criticized a Guardian/+972 Magazine investigation that reported 83% civilian casualties as relying on a partial dataset.
