French Schools Hold 10 a.m. Nationwide Silence for Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard

The tribute comes as many educators say the killings reshaped their sense of safety in the classroom.

  • Commemorative ceremonies were scheduled in Eragny-sur-Oise for Samuel Paty on Sunday and in Arras for Dominique Bernard on Monday.
  • Samuel Paty was killed on October 16, 2020 by Abdoullakh Anzorov after showing caricatures in class, and Dominique Bernard was fatally stabbed on October 13, 2023 by former pupil Mohammed Mogouchkov, who was flagged for radicalization.
  • In the Paty case, eight people were convicted in first instance with sentences from one to sixteen years, and an appeal trial for the principal defendants is set to open in early 2026.
  • In the Bernard case, the alleged attacker remains in pretrial detention, while unions report teachers feel more exposed and some are more cautious when teaching laïcité.
