French Photojournalist Antoni Lallican Killed in Ukraine Drone Strike

An inquiry is being urged after French as well as international groups blamed Russian drones.

Overview

  • Lallican was killed on the morning of October 3 in the Donbass, with journalist unions reporting the strike occurred around 07:20 GMT (09:20 local time).
  • Ukrainian colleague Heorgiy (Georguiï) Ivanchenko was wounded in the same attack and underwent surgery with his condition stabilized, according to reporters on site.
  • Journalist bodies said both men wore protective gear with vests marked “Presse,” calling this the first reported case of a journalist killed by a drone in Ukraine.
  • President Emmanuel Macron attributed the attack to Russian drones and offered condolences, while a Ukrainian brigade said the strike was a targeted FPV drone attack.
  • The European and International Federations of Journalists condemned a potential war crime and pressed for a formal investigation as the precise circumstances remain under review.
