French Nurse Sentenced for €550,000 Health Insurance Fraud
A La Rochelle nurse received a two-year prison sentence, with one year suspended, after exploiting system loopholes for years to defraud the French health insurance system.
- The nurse, identified as Stéphane C., was convicted of defrauding the French health insurance system (CPAM) of over €550,000 through false claims and fabricated care records between 2021 and 2022.
- Investigators revealed that he billed for treatments during vacations, claimed excessive travel expenses despite losing his driving license in 2013, and even used deceased patients for false claims.
- Stéphane C. had a history of similar fraudulent activities, previously fined €200,000 in 2023 for defrauding €450,000 between 2019 and 2020, and had continued his schemes in other regions despite being barred from practice in Charente-Maritime.
- A 2024 police raid uncovered luxury items, including artwork and fine wines, worth hundreds of thousands of euros, all of which have been confiscated to repay the stolen funds.
- The court imposed a two-year prison sentence, including one year suspended, a €70,000 fine, and a permanent ban from practicing as a nurse, with additional legal actions expected for other alleged offenses.
