French National Assembly Backs Extending Tax-Free Card Tips to 2028

Passed 142–48 on a right-led amendment, the measure now heads into Assembly–Senate budget talks.

Overview

  • The extension keeps tips paid by card exempt from income tax and social charges for employees earning up to 1.6 times the minimum wage.
  • The amendment was tabled by LR leader Laurent Wauquiez and supported by the right and the Rassemblement National, with much of the left abstaining.
  • Economy Minister Roland Lescure raised wage concerns and favored limiting the extension to 2027 rather than 2028.
  • The vote forms part of the 2026 budget process and could be revised during the parliamentary shuttle with the Senate through mid-December.
  • Hospitality and other customer-facing sectors welcomed the move as support for pay and job attractiveness, though critics warn it may pressure base salaries.
