French Labor and Justice Ministers Face Court Over Corruption Charges

In a challenging week for President Macron's government, Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt and Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti face separate trials for alleged corruption and misuse of office respectively.

  • French Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt is on trial for charges of favoritism related to a 2009 public sector contract passed when he was a mayor. He is suspected of having favored a private company, the Saur group, in the awarding of a water contract.
  • Dussopt, a key member of President Emmanuel Macron's government, has denied any wrongdoing and stated that he is going before the court to prove he acted in good faith.
  • If convicted by the Paris criminal court, Dussopt could face two years in prison.
  • In the same week, France’s justice minister, Eric Dupond-Moretti, will also face a special court to decide whether he is guilty of having used his office to settle personal scores.
  • Dupond-Moretti, the first serving government minister to be prosecuted for a criminal offence in modern France, has refused to resign but could do so if found guilty on conflict of interest charges.
