French ISIS Figure Adrien Guihal to Be Tried in Iraq With 46 Other Nationals

The move places the group before Iraqi courts known for imposing death or life terms in terrorism cases.

Overview

  • An Iraqi source confirmed that Guihal and 46 other French nationals transferred from Syria in July will face prosecution in Iraq, with interrogations still underway.
  • Iraqi intelligence services say the suspects are wanted by Iraqi justice for involvement in terrorist crimes committed on Iraqi soil.
  • The Iraqi investigative source says the detainees’ membership in the Islamic State group has been established.
  • Guihal, who voiced ISIS claims for the 2016 Nice attack and the Magnanville police killings, joined the group in 2015 and was arrested in Raqqa in May 2018.
  • Iraqi courts have issued numerous death and life sentences in terrorism cases, and in 2019 eleven French nationals initially sentenced to death saw their penalties commuted to life on appeal, as Guihal’s lawyer urges repatriation to France.
