French Farmers Unions Suspend Protests Following New Government Measures

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announces aid, tax breaks, and regulatory changes, but some farmers remain skeptical and continue protests.

  • French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced new measures to address farmers' grievances, including tens of millions of euros in aid, tax breaks, and a promise not to ban pesticides in France that are allowed elsewhere in Europe.
  • Attal also announced a ban on imports from outside the EU that use a pesticide banned in the bloc, and a proposal for a 'European control force' to combat fraud and fight against the import of food products that go against European and French health standards.
  • France's two major farmers unions, FNSEA and Young Farmers, have called on their members to suspend protests and lift road blockades, citing 'tangible progress' in response to their demands.
  • Despite the call to suspend protests, some farmer activists have decided to stay put to see the government commitments in writing, and both unions said they would closely monitor any government implementation.
  • Protests have also extended across Europe, with hundreds of farmers arriving at European Union headquarters demanding relief from rising prices and bureaucracy.
