French Extremist Sentenced for Hate Speech Makes Nazi Salute in Court

Alexis Issaurat, a self-proclaimed fascist, was taken into custody after performing the gesture following his conviction for inciting genocide and hate crimes.

  • Alexis Issaurat, 37, was sentenced to one year in prison by a Paris court for hate speech, including incitement to genocide and racist insults, delivered via Telegram messages.
  • Following his sentencing, Issaurat made a Nazi salute in the courtroom, prompting authorities to place him in custody for contempt of court and public glorification of crime.
  • The court also ordered Issaurat to pay €3,000 in damages to SOS Racisme and €2,000 in legal fees; prosecutors had sought a harsher two-year sentence and a €5,000 fine.
  • Issaurat, who claims to have fought with Ukraine’s far-right Azov Battalion in 2014-2015, has a history of convictions in France for violence, weapons offenses, and other crimes.
  • He faces additional charges in France, including a case involving threats, which is scheduled for trial later this year.
