French Education Council Reportedly Backs Neutral Names for School Holidays

A teachers’ union pushed the change on laïcité grounds in a consultative vote reported at 44–7.

Overview

  • Le Journal du Dimanche reports that the Conseil supérieur de l’Éducation approved an amendment to replace “vacances de la Toussaint/Noël/Pâques” with “vacances d’automne/d’hiver/de printemps.”
  • The amendment is attributed to the FSU-SNUipp, identified as the leading union for primary-school teachers.
  • UNI condemned the move as an erasure of France’s Christian heritage and said it launched a petition to alert the Education Ministry.
  • RN deputy Matthias Renault criticized the reported decision and called for abolishing the council, which he labeled a politicized body.
  • The council serves only an advisory role to the Education Ministry, so any change to official holiday names would still require government action.
