French Climber, 31, Dies After 20-Metre Fall at Tasmania's Sand River

Police are preparing a coroner's report following the death.

  • The man, a French national residing in Victoria, fell about 20 metres while climbing with a friend at the Sand River Conservation Area near Buckland.
  • Emergency services were alerted at about 1:20pm and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter airlifted him to Royal Hobart Hospital in critical condition.
  • He died a short time after arriving at the hospital, police said.
  • Tasmania Police said a report is being prepared for the coroner.
  • ABC reports it is the second fatal cliff fall in the reserve in five years, following the 2021 death of an 11-year-old girl.
