French Blood Service Urges Donors to Boost Summer Reserves

Deferral times for tattooed or pierced donors will be halved in September to expand eligibility

Overview

  • The EFS annual report on June 4 revealed that less than 4% of eligible French citizens donate blood each year, triggering a national appeal.
  • The service aims to build stocks to 100,000–110,000 blood bags before summer holidays to sustain hospital needs.
  • Mobile collection sites have been deployed at workplaces and public venues including the Banque Populaire headquarters, Parc des Princes and Château de Versailles.
  • Plasma donations grew 14% in 2024 to 161,000 donors and the EFS has set a target of 200,000 plasma contributors.
  • Starting September, individuals may give blood two months after receiving a tattoo or piercing instead of waiting four months.
