French Blood Agency to Delete Archived 'HSH' Flags From Donor Records

EFS acted after concluding the labels no longer contribute to transfusion safety.

L'Etablissement français du sang va retirer des dossiers les mentions «HSH» (homme ayant des rapports sexuelles avec un homme).

Overview

  • EFS says an IT-led purge will remove most references by mid to late September 2025, with final cleanups by year-end.
  • The agency had encrypted and sequestered these historical markers in 2022 rather than deleting them immediately.
  • The reassessment followed a spring 2025 request from an individual for access and erasure, with consultations held with the Health Ministry and ANSM.
  • Records of people excluded solely for the former HSH criterion who never donated will be deleted entirely, while donor profiles will be kept with the HSH note removed.
  • EFS did not disclose how many records are affected, and the change comes after LGBT+ group Tous.tes campaigned and gathered roughly 15,000–16,000 petition signatures.
