French Auto Sales Edge Up in September but Market Remains Subdued

A calendar quirk rather than stronger demand drove the gain.

Overview

  • Registrations rose 1% to 140,354 in September, which AAA Data attributes to one extra working day versus 2024.
  • Sales are down 6.25% for the year, with the market described as abnormally low and still 19.8% below September 2019 levels.
  • Electric cars accounted for 22% of September registrations and 18.3% year to date, with hybrids dominant and combustion engines at 3%.
  • PFA says roughly 25–26% EV share is needed this year to stay on track for the 2035 EU phase‑out of combustion sales, a target leaders say will not be met.
  • Renault’s registrations rose 6.5% in September as Stellantis stalled; Stellantis is down 9.47% over nine months and will idle staff for several days in October.
