French Archaeologists Uncover Middle Kingdom Sarcophagus in Luxor

The discovery sheds light on ancient Egyptian burial practices and will be further investigated in 2025.

A French team of archaeologists discovered a reburied sarcophagus from Egypt's Middle Kingdom on December 16, 2024, in Luxor.
The find follows earlier discoveries in 2018 and 2019 on the same site, which included five reburied sarcophagi from the New Kingdom period.
This discovery provides new insights into how ancient Egyptians treated ancestral burials when uncovering older graves during public works projects.
The sarcophagus has been secured in a custom-built wooden case, and its contents will be analyzed in 2025 using 3D modeling and collaboration with specialists.
The excavation site features over 8 meters of stratified layers, representing more than 3,000 years of history, with further exploration planned for the next campaign in October 2025.
