Fremont Police Seek Owner of Off-Leash Dog After Fatal Central Park Attack

Investigators released a photo showing the suspected dog with its handler to solicit tips to Animal Services.

Overview

  • The attack occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Lake Elizabeth in Central Park, where a larger off-leash dog charged a leashed small dog named Cheese during a walk.
  • Cheese underwent emergency surgery, spent five days in intensive care, and later died from severe internal and bite injuries, according to the family.
  • Police on Thursday circulated an image depicting the dog and two adults and described the animal as possibly a Cane Corso, pit bull, or similar breed.
  • Witness accounts shared by the family say the pair briefly secured their dog in a car and then drove away without returning to the scene.
  • The family launched a GoFundMe titled “Justice for Cheese” to help cover about $20,000 in veterinary bills, reporting nearly $6,000 raised as of Friday morning.
