Freezing Rain Prompts Morning Advisories Across Upstate New York and the Hudson Valley

NWS says a west-to-east precipitation band is glazing surfaces with ice that can persist even as temperatures reach the mid 30s.

Overview

  • A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. for Schoharie, Schenectady, Saratoga and Albany counties with a light glaze from freezing rain expected.
  • A Special Weather Statement runs until 10:15 a.m. for Albany, Rensselaer, Greene, Columbia, Ulster and Dutchess counties, warning that surfaces may stay ice covered despite rising temperatures.
  • An earlier statement for Orange, Putnam and Rockland counties, in effect until 6 a.m., cited patchy freezing fog and a new round of light rain that could produce patchy freezing rain and slick untreated surfaces.
  • Forecasters report some observations at or just below freezing as precipitation arrives from the west, increasing the risk for icy spots during the morning commute.
  • Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use extra caution through mid-morning due to potential ice on untreated roadways, highway ramps, parking lots and sidewalks.
