Freeze Warning Hits Southern New Mexico After Late-Season Cold Front

A rapid midweek warm-up precedes late-week winds and a returning front.

Overview

  • National Weather Service Freeze Warning runs from midnight to 9 a.m. Monday for many southern New Mexico communities, including Las Cruces, Deming, Truth or Consequences, Sunland Park, Vado, Columbus and Derry.
  • A separate Freeze Watch is in effect for parts of Eddy and Lea counties as temperatures dip into the 20s and 30s in colder valleys and rural spots.
  • El Paso is forecast to fall to about 38°F at the airport and near 33°F in valley locations, with some low-lying areas in southern New Mexico possibly reaching 28°F.
  • Sunday brought one of the season’s sharpest cool-downs, with many northeast New Mexico towns 10–20°F colder than 24 hours earlier and breezy morning conditions easing by afternoon.
  • Forecasts call for a quick rebound to the 70s and 80s by midweek, followed by strong southwest winds Friday with gusts near 55 mph and a cooler push behind another cold front next weekend.
