Franklin Park Zoo’s New Giraffe Calf Makes Public Debut as Naming Auction Opens

An online auction will choose his name to fund giraffe care.

Overview

  • Born Aug. 7, the male Masai calf was moved to Tufts’ Hospital for Large Animals for nursing complications and returned to the zoo on Aug. 19 after treatment that included plasma transfusions.
  • Zoo staff completed a phased reintroduction to his mother, Amari, and observed nuzzling, licking and guidance as bonding progressed.
  • The calf is being bottle-fed by keepers and has begun nibbling on lettuce and browse.
  • He stands about seven feet tall and weighs roughly 225 pounds, and visitors can see him exploring the Giraffe Savannah with Amari on a rotation with his father, Chad.
  • The naming auction runs through Sept. 28 at 8 p.m., with proceeds supporting food, enrichment and veterinary care, and the current reported high bid is $1,000.
