Frankfurt Unveils First Hydrogen-Fuel Cell Articulated Buses for Line M32

Funded by Hesse, the nine hydrogen buses replace diesel vehicles to cut emissions with a 350 kilometer range per 20 minute refuel.

Overview

  • Nine 18-meter hydrogen fuel cell articulated buses were unveiled on July 24 and will enter service on line M32 from late August.
  • Each bus cost about €1 million, backed by €2.3 million in subsidies from the state of Hesse.
  • The vehicles refuel in 20 minutes at the Römerhof depot using by-product hydrogen from Industriepark Höchst.
  • By replacing nine diesel buses, the new fleet raises In-der-City-Bus GmbH’s zero-emission share to 20 percent.
  • ICB and Traffiq will pause further hydrogen purchases and focus future fleet upgrades on battery-electric models due to cost concerns.
