Frankfurt to Allow Two-Liter Liquids at Select Security Lanes as CT Rollout Accelerates

EU-cleared CT scanners now permit larger liquids at CT-equipped lanes, creating a patchwork of rules during a phased rollout.

Overview

  • From the second half of September, Frankfurt Airport will allow containers up to two liters at specified lanes equipped with CT scanners, while advising travelers to otherwise follow the 100‑milliliter rule.
  • EU approval in July followed software updates that reliably distinguish benign liquids from explosives, with about 700 certified Smiths Detection units installed or being installed across 21 EU countries.
  • Frankfurt reports roughly 40 CT devices across about 160 lanes, with departure areas A and Z fully outfitted and Terminal 3 slated to open in spring 2026 with full CT capability.
  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport says around 80% of its lanes are upgraded, with 24 new lanes now operating in Terminal 1 and reported wait times down, though the central T1 area is scheduled for winter 2026/27.
  • Munich has about 20 CT scanners in Terminal 2 and is running trials that could permit up to two‑liter containers on those lanes once testing concludes.
