Frankfurt Police Intensify Zeil Patrols With Mass Checks and Planned Cameras

More than 5,000 recorded offenses last year prompted calls for a weapons-ban zone alongside expanded surveillance.

Overview

  • About 120 officers from the BAO Zeil and specialist units checked roughly 280 people on Saturday night across the Zeil, the Hauptwache station level and the Allerheiligenviertel.
  • Police initiated nine criminal investigations and 27 administrative proceedings, seizing more than €10,000 on suspicion of money laundering and two pepper pistols, and inspecting nine scene-typical vehicles.
  • Police president Stefan Müller said two new cameras are planned to cover the stretch between Hauptwache and Konstablerwache, initially operated by police under public safety law.
  • Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck endorsed expanded video monitoring and a weapons-ban zone, while Frankfurt’s mayor Mike Josef signaled openness to both measures and urged a broader evening activation concept.
  • The BAO Zeil will maintain visible weekend evening deployments focused on large groups in the pedestrian zone, with site scouting underway for camera placements such as near Brockhausbrunnen and My Zeil.
