Frankfurt Names Four Emergency Shelters to Replace Eschenheimer Tor

City officials say the shelters will offer supervised charity-run beds that underscore the need to build a more resilient homelessness support system.

Overview

  • The City of Frankfurt formally assigned four emergency shelter sites on Monday to replace the Eschenheimer Tor U-Bahn sleeping place after that location was closed for fire-safety reasons.
  • Two sites — Henriette-Fürth-Haus and Tagestreff Weser 5 — are scheduled to open in August and together will take more than 70 people, while Haus Lichtblick and an unnamed downtown building are planned for September with about 75 further places.
  • All four facilities will be run on the city’s behalf by Caritas Frankfurt and Diakonie Frankfurt und Offenbach and will provide supervised sleeping places plus basic care and orientation.
  • Temporary tents that the city set up in the Bockenheimer Anlage are being taken down progressively as the new, staffed shelters come online to avoid interruption of services.
  • Social Affairs Councillor Elke Voitl said the step is urgent short-term relief but stressed the need for longer-term policy to reduce street homelessness and to offer protection, guidance and durable solutions to affected people.
