Frankfurt Halts S3, S4, S5 North of City for Rail Upgrade as Buses Replace Trains

Deutsche Bahn says the shutdown enables infrastructure repairs aimed at long‑term reliability.

Overview

  • Service on S3, S4 and S5 between their northern endpoints and Frankfurt Süd is suspended from 7 November at 04:00 until 19 November at 04:00.
  • S3 and S4 are scheduled to resume on 19 November, while S5 remains curtailed with trains running every 30 minutes from Rödelheim to Frankfurt Süd.
  • Replacement buses cover the S5’s northern section with stops including Weißkirchen/Steinbach, Stierstadt, Oberursel, Bad Homburg, Seulberg and Friedrichsdorf.
  • RB15 and RB16 regional lines are also affected during the works, and Friedrichsdorf station is not served.
  • The project, underway since late October between Frankfurt West or Frankfurt‑Rödelheim and Friedrichsdorf, is slated to finish around 3 December with work on switches, overhead lines and preparations for electronic interlockings.
