Frankfurt Customs Seizes Over 10 Tons of Drugs, 28,000 Protected Specimens and 1 Million Counterfeits in 2024

Overview

  • Customs officers intercepted around 10 tonnes of narcotics—led by 4.4 tonnes of khat, 1.8 tonnes of cocaine and over 2 tonnes of cannabis—valued at €208 million and arrested 71 couriers.
  • The agency confiscated over 28,100 protected animals and plants, including 35 live specimens such as emperor scorpions and a European goldfinch, plus banned souvenirs like a full giraffe skin and reptile leather.
  • More than 1 million counterfeit products, mainly from China, were seized with an estimated street value of €52 million alongside 733,777 unsafe consumer goods.
  • Officers secured approximately €17 million in undeclared cash, opened 95 investigations into suspected EU Russia sanctions violations and impounded over €330,000 in luxury items.
  • The office collected €7.4 billion in taxes and duties, uncovered over 3,100 cases of tax evasion and illegal employment causing €62 million in losses, and removed around 2 million illicit medicines.
