France’s Sports Bodies Unveil Multiyear Mental-Health Plan for Athletes

Officials say the program prioritizes easier access to care after surveys found significant needs among young elite competitors.

Overview

  • The CNOSF, CPSF, INSEP and ANS published a joint multiyear plan on October 10 to expand mental-health support for high-performance athletes.
  • Financial aid will reimburse about five psychology sessions per athlete each year, with a cap of €70 per session.
  • A strengthened directory will help athletes find vetted practitioners matched to their needs and training locations.
  • Coaches and support staff will receive recurring training, and qualified welfare officers will be embedded with French delegations throughout the Games.
  • The plan adds end-of-career support piloted at INSEP and aims to scale using additional resources, potentially including the Paris 2024 surplus, as recent data show 17% at risk of moderate-to-severe depression, 24% with anxiety and 44% with sleep disorders.
