France’s Private Doctors Call Unprecedented Strike From 5 January Over Social Security Budget

Seven unions urge postponement of appointments to protest articles expanding insurer power over fees with new surcharges.

Overview

  • The joint call unites MG France, CSMF, FML, UFML, Avenir Spé/Le Bloc and SML, with backing from Jeunes Médecins and Médecins pour demain, and it extends to interns and medical students.
  • Practitioners are told to reschedule all appointments from 5 January, with UFML urging full closure of bookings from 5 to 15 January pending any parliamentary changes.
  • Surgeons’ union Le Bloc plans a parallel stoppage from 5 to 19 January, and a large national demonstration is set for 7 January in Paris.
  • From 3 December, unions call for escalation by halting updates to the shared medical record, refusing France Santé engagement contracts, and routing sick-leave validations to the Assurance Maladie medical service.
  • Unions oppose article 24 on unilateral tariff revisions in profitable sectors such as radiotherapy, imaging, dialysis and nephrology, and article 26 imposing extra contributions on fee supplements and non‑contracted income, with some advising temporary relocation to Brussels to avoid requisition.
