France’s Measles Surge Eases as 2025 Cases Reach 828, Two Deaths Confirmed

Health authorities warn that incomplete MMR coverage leaves pockets of transmission despite the downward trend.

Overview

  • Santé Publique France reports the epidemic has been in decline since May, with 23 additional cases logged in August under provisional data.
  • Among 828 cases, 289 people were hospitalized, 12 required intensive care, and 111 experienced complications including one encephalitis case.
  • Seventy departments have reported cases this year, with the highest shares in Nord, Bouches-du-Rhône, Aude, Haute-Savoie and Isère.
  • Of cases with known status, 65% were unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, with persistent gaps noted among 15–35 year‑olds and infants.
  • WHO and UN briefings link the resurgence to reduced confidence in vaccines and sub‑95% coverage seen across Europe and the United States.
