France’s Income Tax Reconciliation Sees 13.1 Million Households Owing €1 900 on Average

Mismatched tax bracket adjustments relative to wage growth fuel today’s spike in household tax bills

  • Late July assessments by the DGFiP show 13.1 million households must settle an average €1 900 balance, up from 9.8 million last year
  • The 2024 income-tax brackets were adjusted by 1.8%, falling short of 2.8% private-sector wage increases and creating the shortfall
  • Amounts above €300 will be divided into four equal direct debits scheduled for late September, October, November and December
  • Meanwhile 13.2 million households will receive refunds averaging €1 017 for deductible expenses such as domestic help, donations and rental investments
  • Balances of €300 or less will be collected in a single direct debit on September 25
