Overview

  • On June 1, BRGM data showed 35% of groundwater observation points below normal monthly levels and 46% above historical averages.
  • This year’s drainage phase began in February, earlier than usual, leaving 75% of monitored water tables in decline compared with 70% above norms at the same time last year.
  • Northern France, the southwest Paris Basin and the Rhône region report healthy groundwater indicators, unlike the drier southern basins.
  • BRGM forecasts remain very pessimistic for Roussillon and Corbières aquifers regardless of rainfall or temperature improvements.
  • Hydrologist Violaine Bault warns that ineffective storm recharge and rising demands from irrigation, tourism and pool filling could force water-use restrictions.
