France’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Show Slower Decline, Rise in Key Sectors

After significant reductions in 2023, emissions in France increased slightly in the third quarter of 2024, driven by the building and transport sectors.

  • French greenhouse gas emissions rose by 0.5% in Q3 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, marking a slowdown in the overall reduction trend.
  • Across the first nine months of 2024, emissions fell by 2.4%, a smaller drop compared to the 6% decline during the same period in 2023.
  • The building sector saw a sharp 11.8% increase in emissions in Q3, attributed to heightened heating needs in residential and commercial buildings in September 2024.
  • Transport emissions also grew by 1.1% in Q3, primarily due to increased road traffic, while domestic air travel emissions decreased by 4.1%.
  • Sectors like energy production and manufacturing continued to reduce emissions, but the pace of reductions slowed compared to earlier quarters.
