France's Economy Shrinks 0.1% in Third Quarter

The decline raises pressure to approve a tighter 2027 budget to reassure markets and avert a deeper slowdown.

Overview

  • Insee's provisional estimate published Oct. 30 showed GDP fell 0.1% in Q3, following a 0.2% drop in Q1 and no growth in Q2 and leaving an 'acquis de croissance' of 0.2%.
  • The contraction was driven by a 1.7% fall in exports with transport equipment, notably aeronautics, down 9.1%, and a continued 0.6% drop in gross fixed capital formation while household consumption rose 0.4% and partially offset the decline.
  • Economy Minister Roland Lescure said the economy is 'at a standstill' and warned failure to deliver the government's planned 2027 fiscal tightening would risk a sharper crisis, a view echoed in the Assembly by Budget Minister David Amiel who called for larger savings.
  • Inflation accelerated to about 3.4% year on year in October as energy prices rose, and rating agencies and markets have signalled growing concern about France's debt path with higher borrowing costs already pressuring finances.
  • Widespread October protests have hurt commerce, tourism and confidence and the key near-term indicators to watch are the Assembly's vote on the 2027 budget, French bond yields, and Q4 activity which will show whether the economy slips further toward recession.
