France’s Car Sales Edge Up in October as EVs Reach 24% and 2025 Lags

France would need roughly 200,000 sales in both November and December to match 2024 totals.

Overview

  • October registrations rose 2.9% year on year to 135,529 passenger cars, with the same number of working days as a year earlier.
  • Through ten months, the market is down 5.4% year to date, remaining well below pre-pandemic monthly norms near 170,000.
  • Electric vehicles took a record 24% share in October after a 63% jump in registrations, yet the PFA notes a 19% share year to date that falls short of targets.
  • The government’s “leasing social” logged 41,500 beneficiaries after one month out of a 50,000 cap and is funded with about €370 million via energy-savings certificates, providing only a modest lift.
  • Stellantis and Renault held 25.4% and 24.5% market shares in October respectively, with Renault up 2.5% year to date and Stellantis down 8.3%, while new light commercial vehicles fell 7.0% over the period.
