France’s 2026 Census Launches With Door-to-Door Visits and an Online Option

This year’s form adds items on parents’ birthplace, health-related activity limits, plus telework.

Overview

  • Field operations begin around January 15 in multiple communes, including Digne-les-Bains, with local windows running into mid‑February such as January 15–February 14 in Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyras.
  • INSEE’s approach surveys communes over 10,000 inhabitants every year on a rotating 8% housing sample, while smaller communes are counted by waves covering about 8,000 communes this year.
  • In Aveyron, 106 agents are being deployed across 56 communes, with visits planned from January 16 to February 15 and the four largest towns continuing through February 22.
  • Residents are contacted by agents carrying official ID who deliver internet codes for online responses, with paper questionnaires available and collected by appointment or dropped at the town hall.
  • Only INSEE may process the data under legal confidentiality, and participation is mandatory with fines possible for refusal or knowingly inaccurate answers.
