France’s 2025 Wine Harvest Cut to About 36 Million Hectolitres After August Heatwave

The agriculture ministry cut its forecast in response to August weather that shrank berries, reducing juice.

Overview

  • The Oct. 1 estimate puts national output about 16% below the five-year average and close to 2024’s low of 36.25 million hectolitres.
  • Only AOP wines are expected to rise year over year, up roughly 5% versus 2024 yet still 11% below the 2020–24 average.
  • Languedoc‑Roussillon’s output is seen down 9% from 2024 and 19% versus the five-year mean after heat and drought, with mildew emerging following late rains.
  • In Bordeaux, shrinking vineyard area compounded drought-hit yields, with AOC surface falling from 103,000 hectares in 2023 to 85,000 in 2025 due to uprooting.
  • Beaujolais faces its weakest yield in at least 35 years, with production projected down about 32% from last year.
