France’s 2025 Christmas Basket Slips to €155.30 as Chocolate Prices Jump

Cocoa-driven chocolate inflation offsets declines on other festive staples.

Overview

  • The ICI/franceinfoNielsenIQ study published 11 December sets the seasonal 12-item basket at €155.30, €1.77 lower than 2024.
  • Despite the dip, the basket remains about €10.39 higher than in 2022, a rise of roughly 12% over three years.
  • Chocolates are up 22% year over year to €14.81 for 345 g after a cocoa price spike, while bûche glacée is down 25% to €7.44, foie gras down 9%, smoked salmon down 4% and champagne down 8% to €25.19.
  • NielsenIQ expects shoppers to trade down to private labels or smaller boxes, and reporting finds more home-cooked meals and tighter food budgets even as many plan to overspend.
  • Intermarché owner Les Mousquetaires says parties will cost a bit less this year but warns pre-2022 prices will not return due to higher structural costs, with current shelf inflation described as about 1%.
