France Universités Urges Government to Lift Freeze on Admitting Gazan Students

The call follows a vetting scandal that halted evacuations after a student’s antisemitic posts led to her deregistration.

Overview

  • The association representing university leaders asked for the suspension to be lifted quickly to guarantee continuity of studies and uphold campuses as spaces of international openness.
  • Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced in early August a freeze on France’s evacuation and admission programs from Gaza following the controversy.
  • A judicial investigation for apology of terrorism is underway alongside an internal Foreign Ministry review into why problematic social-media posts were not detected earlier.
  • The student at the center of the case, Nour Atallah, had a French visa and government scholarship to join Sciences Po Lille before being deregistered and subsequently leaving for Qatar.
  • The Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment on the appeal, and officials have previously said nearly 300 Gazans have been brought to France since the start of the year.
